President Joe Chauke Comrade President, Joe Chauke started working for the then department of P&T in 1982 as a trainee technician. He qualified as a technician in 1984. He progressed through the company's ranks until he became a manager, a rank he still holds though he now serves the union as a full time shopsteward. He joined the then Potwa in 1984 and was elected chairperson of a shopsteward committee in 1989 serving in a Pretoria Telkom yard. Rising through the union structures, he got elected as a branch chairperson in the then Northern province of Potwa in 1989. His steady commitment to the workers struggles saw him being again elected as deputy regional chairperson in 1993 until 1997 when he became Gauteng Provincial chairperson, a position he held until becoming a president of CWU after the 1999 congress.
First Deputy President Karthi Pillay Pillay was employed by the then P&T in 1976 as a learner telecommunications electrician and progressed to the current position of technical officer. His union activities within P&T started in the same year. He became Saptea's Pietermaritzburg chairperson in 1978. He retained the position until 1984 after which he served as Saptea's NEC member. In 1994 he was elected the organisation's deputy president, and was tasked with the responsibility of restructuring shopstewards' training and unification. He was a member of the National merger committee and convener of the negotiations technical committee.
